To promote data literacy and data journalism to help improve and strengthen journalists’ investigative skills.


Khalid Khattak is a journalist based in Lahore, Pakistan. He is in the profession for 12 years now and presently works for The News International as a reporter. He launched Pakistan’s first independent data journalism initiative “Data Stories” in 2015 and since then continuing this as a mission.

The ever growing availability of data comes both with opportunities and challenges. The opportunities are unlimited in terms of taking advantage of data to play an effective role as a journalist while challenges are few and the most pertinent is the understanding of data.

Khalid is a 2013 Daniel Pearl Fellow and has worked at The Wall Street Journal (DC Bureau) and the Duluth News Tribune (Duluth, Minnesota). He was one of the speakers at GIJN’s 2nd Asia Investigative Journalism Conference held in Kathmandu, Nepal in 2016.

He has been a visiting faculty at Punjab University’s Institute of Communication Studies. He is a council member of Lahore Press Club and a member of Punjab Union of Journalists.
