The Global Investigative Journalism Network (GIJN) has launched a comprehensive guide to investigative journalism, offering valuable insights into various approaches and techniques.

One standout chapter on data journalism explores the pivotal role of data journalism in uncovering hidden stories and analyzing complex datasets to reveal patterns, trends, and corruption.

Titled “Introduction to Investigative Journalism: Data Journalism”, this chapter highlights how journalists can use data to uncover hidden stories, track corruption, and debunk misinformation, providing readers with practical tools and techniques for leveraging data in their reporting.

The chapter is co-written by Purity Mukami, a statistician turned data journalist with expertise in major investigations like the Pandora Papers and FinCEN Files. Mukami has collaborated with leading organizations such as Africa Uncensored, BBC Africa Eye, and OCCRP. Her co-author, Emilia Díaz-Struck, the executive director of GIJN, is a veteran data journalist who has contributed to global investigations like the Pulitzer-winning Panama Papers during her tenure with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ).

This GIJN’s guide underscores how data journalism is reshaping investigative reporting and serves as a valuable resource for journalists aiming to incorporate data-driven methodologies into their work.
